Role Summary

The successful applicant will create a teaching/learning environment that fosters the academic development of the prisoners.

Main Responsibilities

1. Assesses inmates to determent their educational needs and develops syllabuses to meet those needs
2. Prepares detailed lesson plans and conducts interesting and stimulating lesson plans using a variety of instructional techniques, charts and other materials appropriate to the lesson and the needs and capabilities of the inmates
3. Assesses inmates’ accomplishments and progress on a regular basis and maintains records of such progress4. Prepares, maintains and monitors an inventory of all equipment, books and materials assigned
4. Maintains accurate record of attendance and assessment grades
5. Assists the administration in implementing policies and rules governing the inmates’ lives and conduct in accordance with Education and Prison Regulations
6. Maintains communication with the inmate, their families, the Counsellor and other professionals concerning their academic and behavioural progress
7. Coordinates and participates in school activities to allow inmates to showcase their work
8. Assists inmates with preparing letters and other documents as required
9. Organises in-service courses for Prison Officers and other Prison staff
10. Attends meetings, workshops and training sessions as instructed to ensure awareness of any change in policies or procedures which may be relevant to the role
11. Performs any other related duties as required by Supervisor or any other senior officer in order to contribute to the effectiveness and efficiency of the department

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Education or a related field
Teacher’s Certificate from a recognized Institution
Sound knowledge of Government structure, policies and procedures
Sound knowledge of the Prison laws and regulations
Excellent knowledge of teaching methodologies and curriculum development
Excellent classroom management skills
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Sound knowledge of the use of standard office equipment
Sound interpersonal and leadership skills
