Tortola means ‘Land of the Turtle Doves’. It is the largest of the group of islands and is the most populated. The only town, Road Town is the capital of the Virgin Islands and is the centre of Government and business activities with restaurants, shops, museums, and hotels thereabout. There are many historic ruins and places of interest to visit on Tortola including J. R. O’Neal Botanic Gardens, Virgin Islands Folk Museum, Old Government House Museum, 1780 Lower Estate Sugar Works in Road Town and Sage Mountain in the western end of the island.
