EDUCATION

The Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Loan (RRL) supports projects in the Education Sector related to the reconstruction and rehabilitation of schools, rehabilitation of recreational facilities, as well as the provision of ICT equipment and school supplies for primary and secondary schools.

Reconstruction of the Bregado Flax Educational Centre

The Bregado Flax Educational Centre Compound in Virgin Gorda suffered extensive damage in 2017 from hurricanes Irma and Maria. The RRL is financing the reconstruction of one of the damaged buildings on the compound. The RRL is also financing the consultancy services for contract management and construction supervision of the rehabilitation works. The preparation of the design and technical specifications of the works have been funded by a private donor, Unite BVI

Rebuilding of the Esyln Henley Richiez Learning Centre

The Esyln Henley Richiez Learning centre is the Territory’s first special education school. The school was established by the BVI Red Cross and opened its doors in 1972 as Fort Charlotte Children’s Centre at McNamara. In 1997, the school relocated to John's Hole. The centre was destroyed by the passage of hurricane Irma and is currently being housed at the Althea Scatliffe Primary School in Road Town. The centre provides education and training suitable for children with special needs. Under the CDB RRL, the old centre will be demolished, and a new building will be constructed.

School Supplies and Equipment for BVI schools

In September 2017, the British Virgin Islands (BVI) suffered extensive damage and widespread devastation from the passage of Hurricanes Irma and Maria. Most primary and secondary schools suffered extensive damage, and some were destroyed. The schools’ equipment and furniture were also severely damaged. Against this backdrop, the RRL is to finance the purchasing of office equipment and furniture.

ICT equipment for the IT Backbone of BVI schools

Hurricane Irma caused severe damage to several school buildings and disrupted the network connectivity to schools throughout the BVI. The IT Backbone provides network connectivity for all government schools. The RRL finances the reconstruction of both, the new ICT infrastructure within the schools and the IT Backbone.

Rehabilitation of Recreational Facilities Territory-wide

The Recreational Facilities in Tortola and Sister Islands were severely damaged by the passage of the Hurricanes Maria and Irma. The CDB RRL finances the rehabilitation and reconstruction of basketball courts that suffered damage from the hurricanes in different locations of the territory. Disaster resilient features will be incorporated in the design to enhance the resiliency of the various courts included in this project.
