His Excellency the Governor, Mr. John Rankin, CMG has launched a video competition for students aged 12 to 17 to consider solutions for climate change in the Territory.

The competition will coincide with the United Nations Climate Change Conference, ‘COP26,’ which will be hosted in Glasgow, United Kingdom from November 1 to 12 and will bring leaders from across the world to discuss climate change solutions.  It follows the 16th Conference of Youth, COY16, at Strathclyde University from 28th -30th  October.

Governor Rankin hopes that this initative will encourage conversations among young people and allow them to consider the impact climate change will continue to have on the Territory and come up with innovative and viable solutions.”

The Governor said, “Our young people have the power to spark the much needed changes that can help to combat climate change not only in BVI, but the world. Now, more than ever, we have to find ways to mitigate the effects of global warming and climate change so that our young people can inherit a world that truly benefits them.”

To participate in the competition, students in the Virgin Islands are invited to submit a 90-second video using one of the following prompts:

-          Why is tackling climate change important for BVI?

-          What can I do to stop climate change?

-          What are some solutions to climate change?

The winner of the ‘A Day with the Governor’ intiative will accompany the Governor and the Minister of Natural Resources to view local Climate Change programmes and consider what more the BVI can do to address global warming and climate change.

To register, email the Office of the Governor at bvigovernor@gov.vg or call 468-3501. The deadline for the submission of videos for the competition is October 31.
