Residents of Cane Garden Bay and Brewers Bay will meet for a second time with officials on the Northshore Integrated Coastal and Watershed Stabilization Project.

This project is designed to implement pilot projects to address the issues of flooding, sedimentation, pollution and beach/coastal erosion in Cane Garden Bay and Brewer’s Bay. 

A proposed range of pilot projects will be presented for feedback from the community during the community meeting at Cane Garden Bay’s Community Centre on Thursday, May 19 at 7:00 p.m.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Natural Resources and Labour, Dr. the Honourable Kedrick Pickering said, “The Integrated Coastal and Watershed Stabilisation Project is one that has the full support of my Ministry.  The protection of our natural resources is high on the agenda of this Ministry, and I think that it should be a topic of importance to everyone in this BVI community.”

The firm of Smith Warner International is contracted under the OECS Global Climate Change Allience Project to study Cane Garden Bay and Brewer’s Bay and develop detailed solutions.  Managing Director, Mr. David Smith is expected to address the meeting.

Contracts for implementation of pilot projects under the Northshore Integrated Coastal and Watershed Stabilisation Project must be signed by November 2016, after which there will be a two-year implementation window which can total up to US$478,000. Funding for the project is provided by the European Union.

The Northshore Integrated Coastal and Watershed Stabilisation Project is one of many in the Territory that is receiving funding as a part of the regional Global Climate Change Alliance Project on Climate Change Adaptation and Sustainable Land Management in the Eastern Caribbean. The Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) is coordinating the project.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Labour is managing the implementation of the regional Global Climate Change Adaptation Project locally.
