The senior population of the Territory will be provided with information on healthy aging and life planning in the first of a series of seminars to be held next month. 

According to Social Worker at the Social Development Department Ms. Derice Williams, seniors are being encouraged to secure the future of their generation by attending the first of a series of Aging Enrichment Seminars to be hosted by the Social Development Department.

Ms Williams said: “In formulating the Department’s work-plan for 2015, much focus is being placed on engaging the younger seniors; those persons in their early 60’s and 70’s, to provide them with the necessary information about healthy aging and life planning. The first seminar is entitled “Nuts and Bolts of Estate Planning and Will Preparation, and will be held on February 10 at the BVI Red Cross Conference Room beginning at 5:30 p.m.”  

Ms Williams stated that the purpose of the seminar is to encourage persons to begin to estate plan to secure the future of their generation. She added, “It is known within our society and others that once a person is deceased or becomes disabled, there may be much contention over assets of the individual.  We are providing an avenue for information to encourage persons to make the necessary preparations for their loved ones”.

Persons as young as 40 years are encouraged to attend this free session as professionals will share information and the tools necessary in proper estate planning.

The Social Development Department of the Ministry of Health and Social Development aims to provide the population of the Virgin Islands with effective social services that will empower, promote and enrich their quality of life, while fostering individual independence.
