The community of Virgin Gorda is being urged to join the Social Development Department in rallying against child abuse on April 24.

A rally on child abuse prevention will commence at 1:30 p.m. from the Recreational Grounds adjacent to the Bregado Flax Education Centre and will end at the field adjacent to the Virgin Gorda Yacht Habour.

Social Worker with the Social Development Department’s Virgin Gorda Division, Ms. Loraine Williams said, “We want to encourage the Virgin Gorda community to come out and support the event which features our motivational speaker Mrs. British Virgin Islands 2015, Mrs. Shevone Findlay.”

According to Ms. Williams, the community is encouraged to wear blue on that day as it signifies their support for the victims and their families as well as send a clear message that they all stand together in the fight against sexual abuse in the Territory.

The rally is a part of the department’s Drive Blue Wear Blue campaign and will feature participants from public and private schools on Virgin Gorda.

Persons can contact the Virgin Gorda branch of the Social Development Department at 468-6524 or visit the office located upstairs Cable TV in The Valley, Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

The month of April is observed annually as Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness Month by the Social Development Department.

The Social Development Department of the Ministry of Health and Social Development aims to provide the population of the Virgin Islands with effective social services that will empower, promote and enrich their quality of life, while fostering individual independence.
