The Department of Waste Management received a significant donation from the Department for International Development (DFID) which will aid the department in more efficient debris removal.

Manager, Mr. Greg Massicote said his department received three pickup trucks, two wreckers, one flat bed truck, two bucket trucks, and one crusher.  “This donation provides us with the tools that will allow us to get the job done in-house, improve our efficiency and puts us in more control of the system,” Mr. Massicote said.

According to Mr. Massicote, personnel from DFID have been in the Territory training members of his staff on the use of the equipment.  “We have already put the equipment to work. Since the training, several vehicles have been removed from the town and other areas on Tortola,” he said.

“The derelict vehicles are being transported to Pockwood Pond where oil and other contaminants will be removed from the vehicles to make the scrapping process more environmentally friendly,” the Manager said.

“With the crusher we are one step closer to shipping vehicles and other recyclable debris such as galvanize for the purposes of recycling,” Mr. Massicote noted.

The Manager thanks DFID for their generous contribution and the Governor’s Office who facilitated the process.

The Department of Waste Management is committed to ensuring that the natural beauty of the Territory is enhanced by utilizing state of the art waste management technology to ensure timely collection, disposal and where possible the recycling of waste.
