The Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) officially launched its radio station, RAMS Radio, on Monday January 18, during their general assembly.

Acting Principal, Mrs. Sandy Underhill said the initiative is being spearheaded by teacher sponsor and supervisor, Mrs. Renee Weston-Joseph.

Mrs. Underhill said that the project had been in the making since 2012 and, with the assistance of Mr. Meritt Herbert, the school was able to get the frequency 88.7on the FM dial. She said due to lack of funding, the decision was made to launch an internet radio.

Principal Underhill said, “I saw this as an avenue to create a positive perception of our school, to encourage school pride and an excellent platform to gain exposure for those students who aspire to venture into a career of communications.”

Mrs. Underhill added, ‘We can all agree that the internet is the most effective medium for global access and what better way to spread the news about ESHS.”

The goal of RAMS Radio is to bridge the gap between the school and the wider community by highlighting important events, happenings, and accomplishments while providing opportunities for students to showcase their communication talents and learn new skills.

Mrs. Underhill went on to state that a number of talented students in various fields of study at ESHS have emerged as a result of this initiative. The RAMS Radio is for students and will be operated by students who are a part of the Radio Club.

Programmes and news will officially begin later this month and while the project is in its pilot stage, the focus will be on news and music which can be accessed on the school’s website.

Currently, the RAMS Radio Club has nineteen active members, seven of which are disc jockeys in training. All seven DJs performed in the pre-competition event held at the end of last term to promote the RAMS Radio Station. The results of the pre-competition advanced Jadon Hodge, Bahija Lloyd, Jahkoy Pemberton, Jordan Lewis, and Christen Glasgow to the final competition to be held. The results of this final competition will decide which DJ will emerge as Top ESHS RAMS Radio DJ.

Minister for Education and Culture, Honourable Myron V. Walwyn said he is proud of the ESHS students on their quest to create a culture of excellence.

During the radio station’s launch, Mrs. Underhill thanked Mr. Meritt Herbert, Mr. Floyd Penn, DJ Dre, DJ Bertrum, Mr. Eldred Parsons, and LIME for their contribution to the initiative.

The radio station can be accessed on the website http://eshsramsradio.com.
