REMARKS BY HONOURABLE KYE RYMER
MINISTER FOR TRANSPORTATION, WORKS AND UTILITIES

CONTRACT SIGNING GREAT MOUNTAIN ROAD PROJECT

July, 9th 2020

Good Morning,

Today, we are pleased to sign this contract for phase one of the Great Mountain Road Repair project with Autland Heavy Equipment Co. Ltd valued at $194,065.08.  With this project, we will witness the beginning of the restoration of a major artery in our road network.  While there will be a period of discomfort, this minor inconvenience leads us on the path towards a better road network.  We ask the motoring public for their assistance as we work to deliver an improved experience for the people of the Virgin Islands.

This project will be implemented by the Recovery and Development Agency, in support of the Ministry of Transportation, Works and Utilities. This has been fully funded by the Government of the Virgin Islands through the Caribbean Development Bank Recovery and Rehabilitation Loan.

Today I want to acknowledge the Premier and the team at the Ministry of Finance for their work in the revision of this loan, so that we can get more value for money and have more works done within our Territory.

The work encompasses several meters of slope stabilization and attendant road reconstruction.  Other associated works include the construction of kerb walls to the road edge, and refurbishment and reinstallation of road furniture. The Scope of Works include, but is not limited to:

  1. General site clearance and disposal;
  2. Demolition of existing sections of reinforced concrete pavement
  3. Construction of 30m of reinforced concrete pavement with asphalt overlay
  4. Construction of 22m long by 4.5m high reinforced concrete retaining wall
  5. Construction of 10m long swale drain
  6. Construction of 125m of reinforced concrete kerb walls
  7. Installation of 30m of guard rails

The work on this project will commence 14 days following the signing of the contract.  It will benefit the Virgin Islands community by improving the road network to ensure residents and visitors remain safe on the Territory’s roads.

A total of eight road projects have been planned for execution beginning with today’s contract signing ceremony and continuing into 2021.

Congratulations to the awardees of this contract, and I look forward to the completion of this project.  Thank you.
