The Ministry of Communications and Works is set to implement a two-way traffic configuration along Upper Main Street on June 1.
This is part of the Upper Main Street Initiative aimed at alleviating congestion in Road Town and enhancing mobility throughout the city center. The primary goals of this project also includes enhancing traffic efficiency and mobility throughout the capital, improving road safety for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians and implementing essential road repairs, resurfacing, and drainage system upgrades to mitigate flooding.
Minister for Communications and Works, Honourable Kye Rymer emphasised that this initiative is a response to the ongoing traffic challenges observed since the implementation of the Road Town Traffic Turnaround on June 2020.
Honourable Rymer said, "While we have seen improvements to the traffic flow, certain areas, particularly the junction of Flemming Street and Fishlock Road, still experience significant congestion during peak hours."
The minister added, “The number of licensed vehicles in the Virgin Islands has surged from approximately 17,350 in 2020 to around 19,500 in 2024, adding pressure to our road infrastructure. To address this, the two-way traffic configuration will be applied to the stretch between the Road Town Methodist Church Burial Ground at Joe’s Hill and the intersection of Main Street and Flemming Street near the E.A. Creque building.”
The decision to implement the two way traffic also aims to provide a more direct and flexible route, redistributing traffic volumes and easing congestion during busy travel times. Local businesses along this corridor have been informed that parking will be prohibited to facilitate the new traffic flow and ensure safety for all road users.
Motorists are encouraged to exercise caution and patience during this transition, as new signage will be implemented. Officers from the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force and traffic wardens will be present to assist in ensuring a smooth rollout.
The Ministry of Communication and Works remains dedicated to ensuring the continued development and maintenance of public infrastructure in keeping with international standards.
